What Remains: Exploring Memory Through Abstract Painting

A Mixed-Media Workshop with Surien Fourie

Date: Saturday, November 7, 2026

Time: 1 PM to 4 PM

Location: 210 Gallery, 210 Princess Street, Winnipeg
Registration: $15 per person

How do you paint something you can remember but can no longer see?

Join artist Surien Fourie for a hands-on mixed-media workshop exploring how memories, relationships, and personal experiences can be transformed into abstract paintings.

Inspired by Surien's exhibition Soul Baring: A Path Without a Mother, participants will begin with a privately written memory and gradually build layers of acrylic paint, collage, drawing, and texture over the words. Through colour, shape, line, and expressive marks, the workshop explores how personal experiences can become visual art without having to represent them literally.

As the painting develops, some elements will remain visible while others disappear beneath new layers, reflecting how memories change over time while continuing to shape our personal histories.

What to Expect

Surien will guide participants through a series of creative exercises, beginning with a personal memory and exploring ways to translate it into colour, texture, and abstract forms.

Participants will experiment with layering, covering, and revealing different elements of their work, allowing the painting to develop gradually. By the end of the session, each participant will take home a completed mixed-media abstract painting and a creative process they can continue using.

No previous painting or abstract art experience is required.
