Soul Baring, A Path Without a Mother

A Solo Exhibition by Surien Fourie

November 6 to December 19, 2026

Soul Baring: A Path Without a Mother is a collection of abstract paintings by Brandon-based artist Surien Fourie, exploring grief, memory, and the experience of losing a mother.

The exhibition grew from a series of intimate conversations with women who had lost their mothers to illness. Each shared a different experience, shaped by when the loss occurred, how they navigated their grief, and what they came to understand along the way.

Drawing from these conversations and her own experience of losing her mother to a terminal illness, Fourie translates complex emotions into colour, movement, and layered textures. Her paintings reflect the many ways grief can be felt and expressed, from sorrow and uncertainty to acceptance and resilience.

Soul Baring brings these personal stories together, inviting viewers to reflect on loss, the memories we carry, and the ways our relationships continue to shape us.

About the Artist

Surien Fourie is a mixed-media artist based in rural Manitoba. Originally from South Africa, she has lived in the Canadian prairies for more than 20 years.

Fourie graduated from the Milan Art Institute's Mastery Program in 2022 and holds a Therapeutic Art Certification from Transformation Academy. Since 2018, she has taught visual arts at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba.

Her practice centres on abstract expression and the exploration of human emotions. Working intuitively with bold colours, expressive marks, and layered textures, she creates paintings that reflect experiences of loss, hope, love, and change.

“I paint emotions,” she says. “They capture the essence of the human experience - loss, hope, love, anger.”

Through her work, Fourie invites viewers to find their own connections and meanings within each painting.
